Proshield+™ Expands its Horizon, Secures Sales Agreement with Kansai Paint Asia Pacific

KUALA LUMPUR (27 March 2024) – The Advanced Materials team have entered a supply agreement with Kansai Paint Asia Pacific (KPAP) to supply its graphene-based paint additive ProShield+™. The agreement sees the Advanced Materials team their Underwater Epoxy (UWE) additive over the course of two years for incorporation into Kansai Paint products.

“I am confident that this will take us into a long-term collaboration to grow and diversify our market segments together in a manner that adds value to both parties,” said Dr. Mahpuzah Abai, CEO of PETRONAS Technology Ventures during the signing ceremony.

ProShield+™ was launched in late 2022 as the pioneer product of the Advanced Materials corporate venture. By harnessing the superior properties of graphene, the paint additive was designed to provide corrosion protection against harshest of weather conditions to reduce maintenance repainting costs, extend the lifespan of the infrastructure, and ultimately enhance asset safety and integrity.

The idea behind ProShield+™ is fairly simple; simply add in ProShield+™ masterbatch into regular epoxy paint and watch as the paint’s corrosion resistance gets elevated into higher levels. This happens as the graphene nanoplates in the coating now creates a torturous pathway that hinders corroding agents from reaching the steel surface. True to the team ethos in making products as efficient and customer-friendly as possible, ProShield+™ does not require any changes to the existing blending process nor does it require any specialized machineries to be incorporated into the epoxy paint.

The properties of ProShield+™ hinders the corroding agents from reaching the steel surface and slows corrosion.

PETRONAS Launches ProCharge+ to Extend Li-ion Battery Lifespan

PETRONAS Launches Pro Charge+ to Extend Li-ion Battery Lifespan

KUALA LUMPUR, 23 June 2023 – PETRONAS, through its commercialisation and marketing arm, PETRONAS Technology Ventures Sdn Bhd (PTVSB), has launched its second graphene-based solution, ProCharge+, a conductive additive for Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery typically used in electric vehicles, automatic guided vehicles, and the robotics sector, among others.

Formulated to enhance conductivity and thermal performance as well as extend battery life, ProCharge+ aims to meet the growing demand for more durable and compact batteries amidst the rise of electrification during energy transition.

PETRONAS Vice President of Group Technology and Commercialisation, Aadrin Azly said, ProCharge+ signifies another milestone for PETRONAS’ research and development in advanced materials.

“At PETRONAS, we strive to be a pivotal part of the solution by offering products that seamlessly integrate into people’s lives, enabling them to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle.

“With ProCharge+, we focus on long-term business value-creation through improved battery cell lifespan and performance while supporting the organisation’s environmental, social and governance aspirations,” he said.

ProCharge+ is a versatile solution that exhibits high compatibility with various Li-ion battery chemistries, enabling seamless integration into existing manufacturing processes.

Compared to carbon black additives, ProCharge+ is demonstrably capable of significantly reducing electrode volume resistivity by 90 per cent and more than 60 per cent compared with carbon nanotubes (CNT).

ProCharge+ will be showcased at the PETRONAS Energy Park during the upcoming Energy Asia in Kuala Lumpur from 26 – 28 June 2023.

PETRONAS had recently introduced corrosion protection paint additive ProShield+ under its advanced materials portfolio.

Proshield+, First Advanced Material-Based Corrosion Protection Technology

Proshield+, First Advanced Material-Based Corrosion Protection Technology

KUALA LUMPUR, 5 April 2023 – PETRONAS today launched a breakthrough product to address the perennial corrosion-related pain points that compromise asset integrity.  Formulated using graphene material, which is an ultra-high barrier advanced material, ProShield+, is a paint additive for steel structures.

Developed in-house, ProShield+, has been proven to strengthen coatings’ resistance against harsh weather conditions and protect assets from corroding agents. Overall, the formulation contains three times higher water barrier properties than conventional epoxy paint and helps to improve adhesion as well as resistance against abrasion and ultraviolet (UV). It has also shown up to three times more improvement in abrasion resistance than conventional epoxy paint.

ProShield+ can be added to major paint systems to double the average lifespan of surface coating to last up to 16 years. It does not require any change to the existing paint blending process and can be applied in the same way as other coats of paint.

PETRONAS Senior Vice President of Project Delivery and Technology Datuk Bacho Pilong said, “As a dynamic global player in the energy industry, PETRONAS is progressively stepping out and constantly pursuing innovation to address business pain points and sustainability concerns. ProShield+, PETRONAS’ first advanced material product, a result of dedicated research and development in advanced materials, is part of PETRONAS’ dynamic venture into growth areas to facilitate energy transition.”

ProShield+ has been piloted and deployed at specific PETRONAS assets in both upstream and downstream sectors. Based on a simulated calculation, the application of ProShield+ to the structures can reduce overall carbon footprint by an average of 50 per cent per platform per year and reduce maintenance spending of re-painting works by up to 66 per cent per platform.

Under its advanced materials portfolio, PETRONAS has also developed graphene-based formulations that can be incorporated into lithium-ion batteries to boost performance, lifecycle, and thermal dissipation ability; as well as one that can be sprayed on composites to enhance mechanical properties.

These formulations are designed to meet customers’ needs, market demands, and improve the quality and performance of existing solutions to the end users.
